Music at Argyle

At Argyle, we are proud of all the opportunities on offer for young musicians.  As part of our music curriculum, children have the opportunity to learn to play the violin, keyboard, recorder, tin whistle, flute or guitar. This is in addition to all the instruments used during our weekly music lessons ranging from the tambourine to xylophones and glockenspiels. We also work with 'Music Mentors' from the London School Of Economics. These talented musicians offer free lessons to children who show a strong commitment to their instrumental playing and wish for further support. In the Early years our children benefit from our established links with the Da Capo Music Foundation.

We have a vibrant school choir full of talent and enthusiasm. Each year choir takes part in the Camden Music Festival. In 2016 they sang in the Royal Albert Hall, an event that takes place every two years. Our children also enjoy a weekly whole school singing assembly, where we learn a variety of songs and styles of music. In addition to this, the English Pocket Opera Company, hold fortnightly assemblies. EPOC has took up residency at Argyle Primary in 2015 and play a vital role in inspiring and extending Argyle pupil’s music knowledge and experience.

There are plenty of other performance opportunities during the school year. All year 2 children take part in an annual Cluster festival where we join other schools in our community for a joint concert. Our instrumentalists demonstrate the skills they have learned in an annual performance and the Early Years put on a singing concert. Year 6 pupils draw together all their acting and singing skills in their end of year production.  In the summer of 2016, the whole school put on a production of a Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Our established links the the Foundling museum also provides regular workshop and performance opportunities. In 2016, our year 3 children worked alongside renowned composer, Luke Styles, and composed a new Foundling Anthem. This was performed to members of the public, in the inspiring setting of the Foundling museum gallery.

This year our Year 1 children took part in a Gamelan project in which they learned to play the Indonesian instruments alongside the art of puppetry.

Royal Albert Hall

In March 2016 our school choir participated in the Camden choir festival. This year it was held in the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. It is a great opportunity for children to sing with other choirs and listen to other vocalists and musicians. The evening was hosted by Jon Snow. The children were excited when David Walliams made an appearance to give his support to the event.

Not only did the choir take part, but instrumentalists also had the opportunity to join children from other schools and join in the performance.
